The Alligator river story is a tale of love and the poor attempts to fulfill love.In the story are a group of people that all played a part in guiding this love of a man and women. I will rate the character's in terms of my respect for each person, one being the highest and five being the least amount of respect.
I will start with whom I think is the worst character and didn't respect the traditions of what true love is, Abigail. Abigail is a poor excuse for a lover. When someone is truly in love, not only will they wait for a life time to be with there lover, She actually got convinced that sleeping with another man would help her cause, bloody whore. I can agree waiting for that boast of life that your lover can bring will make the clock seem motionless but a fifty mile drive or missing work doesn't even begin to equal cheating on your lover for a short cut in time. If Abigail was a good women she would have either roughed out the drive or waited for time when her and Gregory could spend there love together the right way. She was arrogate enough to sleep with another man to be with Gregory, I would give this women the big boot in her piss poor attempt in how to be her lover and no respect for the value of true love. Abigail gets a 5.
The second to last character of respect would have to be Gregory. If he knew they where in love then he should have made a better attempt to be with Abigail. Instead, he would make her go to trifling extremes to be with him. In the traditions of love, Gregory seems like he must not want it that bad. I do understand not wanting to be with her after her fling with the boatman Sindbad but, If he really loved this women he should grow some testicular fortitude and cross the river. His brave swim would have won her over like a knight's tale. Alligators though massive in size don't attack grown men out of hunger unless its provoked by food. A little knowledge and some balls would have saved his relationship, he would have even looked like more of a man. I give Gregory a 4 for not trying as hard a his women and being scared to fulfill his heart.
The next worst character of respect would be Slug. Even if he did love Abigail enough to beat the crap out of Gregory for his lack of care, It was not his love to fight. Slug reminds me of the kid in school who used to fight other people's battles because he has no other way of getting attention. Like a lost boy trying to prove his manhood, Slug would have made a better lover for Abigail. His beating of Gregory does get him some respect because at least he will fight for Abigail's cause. He should have been in Gregory's shoes and used that same determination to see his women. I give Slug a 3 in respect for at least trying to be a man.
Getting better on my scale of respect is Sinbad. Though Sinbad seems like a chauvinistic man trying to get laid, he did nothing wrong in the scents of love. People will say he's bad for sleeping with Abigail knowing she wants to be with Gregory but the fact is he was testing her love,(which was apparently not strong at all).Gregory is just like any other single man out in the world, he will try his best to find some quick love if the opportunity arises.Gregory has done nothing wrong except for trying a women's love for another man. These tests of love happen every day if your in a good relationship because you radiate confidence and draw single people in who want that love. Sinbad Gets a 2 on the scale for at least showing Abigail's flaws to Gregory.
Last on the list and the character that gets the most respect is Ivan. Ivan At least saw that it's not up to him to save Gregory and Abigail's love, it is up to them to determine how bad they want to be with each other. Ivan stayed out of the firing line and left it up to the couple to determine there fate. It was not Ivan's job to insure the lovers get to be with each other it is there own. Ivan gets a one for the most respect for the knowledge to stay out of other people's business.I agree he could have helped but it was not his duty or his love to fight.
Of all the characters Abigail is the worst followed shortly by Gregory for there poor attempt to keep a relationship. Fifty miles and a river of alligators will not stop true love. There have been world wars and much greater disasters that other people fought through to be with the person they love. The alligator river story was just a small test of love which the couple failed miserably.

Michael's metaphysical assumtions
The idea that somthing can come from nothing is irrational. As far back as history can be told, people have always had a concept of a greater power. Things simply don't appear out of thin air. Even scientist and religion agree that there is a reason for everything. Metaphysics are an explaination for things we don'tunderstand and our minds have not grasp.
Most philosophers discribe metaphysics as the nature of reality. No mattter what religioin you practice there is a supreme power with some set of principals regarding the laws of nature. I'm not big on being a follower but when a concept has that much powe from so many indivduals you can't help but to be persuaded into reality. The metaphysical world can offer anwsers for the things our technological minds have not understood. The universe around us is ever changing and is so large and diverse that it out wieghts the current capacity of our brain. Out of metaphysics a purpose arises, even if it is only to figure out the W's( who, what, when, where, and why?) of our lives.
When humans began to distinguish the difference between good and evil we began to become metaphysic beings. Even the most brilliant scientist can only prove a theory so far before hitting a mental barrior. Albert Einstein was one of the most brilliant scientist of our time and still he believed in a higher power or God. Socrates( A philosopher) once made a formula to believing in God. If you don't believe in any kind of metaphysics then you have gained nor lost anything but if you do have a belief you'll have a healthier society regardless if there is a reward in the afterlife. Basically, you have everything to gain and nothing to loss.
Metaphysics has built purpose for learning not only in the world around us but has helped us learn more than we thought possible, pushing the bounderies of human knowledge. Learning the nature of the world is important for survival and key to bettering life. Metaphysics are weak in proof but strong in faith. The metaphysical world helps comfort us in our unknowing and can help us start to grasp the ideas that seem impossible. With the modern science mixed with metaphysics there is no bound for the human mind.
